Spanning five years, this staged renovation transformed an ageing rural home into a warm and contemporary retreat. Beginning with the kitchen and living spaces before extending through the laundry, bedrooms, bathrooms and home office, each phase was carefully considered to create a cohesive home that has evolved over time.

Natural timber, layered textures and a timeless material palette bring warmth and character, while improved functionality ensures the home is as practical as it is beautiful. Set amongst a stunning rural hillside, the completed renovation gives the home a fresh new lease on life.

With the addition of a new wing incorporating a lounge, guest bedroom with ensuite, and a scullery, this kitchen was designed to feel warm, inviting, and highly functional. Small appliances are concealed in the scullery, allowing a dedicated area within the kitchen to transition from everyday family life to a bar-like entertaining space, with open shelving providing interest and a place for curated objects. 

Working with the home’s rural setting and existing railway sleeper fireplace, we introduced contemporary elements layered with warmth and texture to complement the architecture and its surroundings. Soft, gauzy curtains and shutters filter the natural light and add depth to the interior, while the television is contained within the lounge, allowing the family room to remain a relaxed space for conversation and connection.

A practical new layout, generous custom storage and thoughtfully layered materials create a calm, functional space designed to suit a busy family now and into the future. 

The primary suite was a generous yet plain space that needed greater warmth, interest and definition. Framing down the angled ceiling created an intimate bed alcove, giving the room a strong focal point and a more considered sense of proportion.

With a pre-teen, soon to become a teenager, we selected a more grown-up colour palette that would transition with him over time. Relocating the bedroom door created an alcove for additional storage, a homework desk and a dedicated gaming space.  

With the client working from home regularly, a dedicated office was designed to feel both inviting and fit for purpose, with printers and task lighting discreetly concealed. Freestanding storage pieces with solid bases accommodate paperwork and everyday essentials, while open shelving above provides a lighter, more curated contrast to full built-in cabinetry.  

This bathroom design was awarded Highly Commended at the 2026 TIDA New Zealand Home Awards.
